Background
Goran village is situated at Jhadol block of Udaipur district. From block headquarter it is 25 km far and from district headquarter it is 71 km far. In 2009 Wadi project is started and Goran village was also part of the project. The project is supported by NABARD- National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and covering 500 families of 7 villages of Jhadol and Gogunda block namely Surajgarh, Senwara, Goran, Amod, Manas, Nala Bada and Godawara villages. The project is aim to generate livelihood avenues for tribal families through wadi promotion and skill enhancement and alternative livelihood option like poultry, education. The core activities under wadi program are- Agro – horti-Forestry intervention. , Soil Conservation, Water Resource Development, Women’s involvement in development process & Drudgery reduction, Community Health Approach Strengthening people’s organizations at various levels and Agribusiness promotion for fairer returns of intercrops and other products.
The most important component of project is to develop fallow land by all means like treatment of soil, provisioning of irrigation facilities and developing orchard on the same land. Health is also one of the major components of Wadi project. The programme focuses on alleviating poverty, and strengthening livelihoods through an integrated tribal livelihood support program based on the ‘Wadi’ model which works upon the core component of agro-horticulture development, with the primary unit of support being the house hold.
About Beneficiary
Mr. Dhuleshwar s/o Fauja is 38 year old person lived in a nuclear family at Goran village of Jhadol block of Udaipur district. He has three daughters and two sons. He cleared 5th class exam and single bread earner in his family. Agriculture is main source of income for the family. He also migrate for search of labour work. He has total 7 bigha land and 2 bigha is irrigated and 5 bigha is un irrigated. He has 3 Cows, 1 Buffalo, and 3 goats. He agreed to take one wadi and ready to work as per norms.
Intervention Under Project
Meetings were organized in village and wadi concept shared with the community. Dhuleshwar agreed to take wadi at his land and follow all instruction given to develop wadi. He was selected for I Batch (2009-10) wadi and pit digging work completed as per norms. He applied manure kit along with neem cake, bone mill after receiving from project, to pit and after rainfall plantation work done. He planted total 40 horticulture and 100 forestry plants which include Anvla, Mango, Lemon, Bamboo, Neem etc. He and his wife work very hard for the plant survival because to keep plant alive in summer is really a big challenge. But the family face it and get success. They get geti, tagari, favda, khurpi. Soil water conservation work done at his wadi plot to increase moisture content. During summer and pre summer period irrigation is required for wadi so under project irrigation facility is developed through well development, water tank construction, pipe line given to the well owner. This helped him to take two crop (rabi and kharif) because now irrigation source is created which will help him and other partner of well also.
He also get wheat seeds in 2010-11 with DAP, Urea and training on improved agriculture. During regular visit and meetings information related to various government schemes give to him and staff also explain the process.
Outcomes
Dhuleshwar is very happy to participate under wadi program. The changes came to his life is clearly visible now. In collaboration of various intervention he started getting additional income now. At the starting of the project in 2009 he do not have sufficient fodder so the number of cattles were limited but now the fodder production is increased and he is able to feed 4 cows, 3 buffalo, 2 ox and 6 goat. He give his ox to neighbour families for field ploughing and received charges for the ox services. Before 2009 he was paying to another person for getting ox services to plough the field. He is also earning by selling milk.
In 2010 he received improved seeds for wheat with green vita compost, DAP and Urea and having irrigation facility so the production of wheat increased from 4 Qtl to 7 Qtl. He also use vermin compost for wheat crop. Later in 2011 he get wheat seeds from gram sevak and applied vermin compost, total 8 qtl wheat he produce from same field. Hence, the productivity of land is also increasing due to apply of vermin compost.
