Benefits of Using Vermi Compost

Background

Parevi village is situated at Kantharia Panchayat of Jhadol block. In this village RBKS and Wells for India, UK completed watershed project during April 2008- September 2011.Pal fala is one hamlet of Parevi village where Kesulal Gorna is living with his family. He has 3.5 Bigha agriculture land. Earlier he was growing wheat, chili, ginger and maize with the use of ‘desi khad’. He is the owner of well but due to limited water availability, the production is hampered. His livelihood was totally depending on agriculture produce.

Intervention and outcome through Vermicompost and Nal Bandhna

Kesulal s/o Verda Gorna from Pal fala contact to our staff and VDC during the meeting and share that in his well the water is limited so in absence of irrigation the production is limited from the field. During the VDC meeting, our staff introduced a new intervention (Nal Bandhna)  to recharge the well. Kesulal and Dhanna Ji shown interest and faith to adopt this new intervention.

He constructed Nal Bandhna at his well along with Vermi Compost. Kesulal takes care of both the activity and the results are encouraging for others. The water level is increased. Vermi compost has also a big success and helps to provide additional income. In 2009 he produces 10 quintal compost and use it in the agriculture crop – wheat and maize and remaining 2 quintal compost sell to the other farmer 250 rs. per quintal. Beside this, he also sells 15 kg. verms @ 90 Rs. Per kg. Thus he has earned directly 1850 rs. from Vermi compost activity. Use of vermi compost and irrigation facility helps to increase production – wheat 8 quintal per bigha from 1 bigha land, maize 3 quintals per bigha from 2 bigha land, ginger from 0.25 bigha land and chili from 0.25 bigha land.

We study the production taken by Kesulal in 2011-12 and find out that he is taking good production with the use of vermin compost. During the study, we came to know that red and black ants are harmful to verms and he lost verms. But Kesulal already realizes about the importance of verms so after losing verms he purchases the same from Dhoolchand by paying 150 Rs for 1 kg. He also repaired and complete plaster and cover it with a wooden sheet for the protection of verms.

he produced vermin compost apply to take maize and garlic in Kharif crop, wheat and mustard in rabi crop and also he produce maize in the Jayad crop.

Crop Name Maize Garlic Wheat Mustard Maize
Season Kharif Kharif Rabi Rabi Jayad
Production 13 10 1 4
Remarks He sail 3 qtl maize and earn total 3300 Rs By selling garlic he earn 9000 Rs. 4 Qtl wheat is used during his daughter marriage party and no wheat is purchased from market He use the mustard oil in his daughter’s marriage occasion and no oil is purchased from market As a progressive farmer he sown maize in summer and sail maize ( Bhutta) in market. Total 4 QTL he sail and earn 15 rs per kg so in total 6000 Rs earned

Conclusion

Now Kesulal is paying college fees for his two sons and they are studying in Udaipur. His daughter is doing a nursing course. In 2011-12 he earn 18300 Rs. by selling crop produce in the market. h Beside this during his daughter’s marriage he was having sufficient wheat and oil for offering a meal to all guest. The enough food he has with him for the family at home for a whole year. Thus we can say that the watershed work and vermin compost & nal bandhna works help him to make remarkable changes in his family members life.
