The multifarious activities, which have been undertaken in agricultural development
as part of integrated natural resource management, have been able to influence
the agricultural practices of people. People have begun to practice vegetable
gardening, inter cropping, using compost and mechanized agricultural equipments,
which has ultimately helped in supplementing their incomes.
With the introduction of the new improved Sirohi breed, substantial increase
has occurred in the income of those target families rearing goats. As against
the Rs 300 - 800 that they earned earlier, they are now earning Rs 1000-1200
from the same goats.
Use of feed menzers for management of fodder has considerably reduced the
losses of fodder and has reduced the expenditure on this head. Thus this practice
has enabled people to save some amount of money.
Through various efforts in soil and water resource management such as construction
of anicuts, gabions, irrigation channels, deepening of wells and construction
of other water harvesting structures, there has been increase in the water
level in comparison to before. Consequently, the availability of water has
also increased. Wells have got recharged and people are going for second cropping.
Through concerted efforts the organization has been able to bring about change
in the attitudes and perceptions of the people who realize that the interventions
being done are their needs and not those of the organization's. This has been
instrumental in seeking their qualitative participation in the programs.
The village institutions have made an achievement in establishing linkages
with the various government institutions at the block and district levels
and have been able to procure services such as road, electricity, Primary
health center, and schools for child laborers. Further these institutions
have also succeeded in constructing wells and parapets in their community.
One of the major achievements has been in the development of the community's
capacity in understanding and managing various natural resources as well as
agriculture works. The community has acquired knowledge as well as skills
to execute the various technical works in soil and water conservation and
agriculture and livestock development.
Capacity of organisation in NRM
The interventions in the area of natural resource management has capacitated
the organization immensely to work in this area including agriculture, livestock
development and water resource management, both in terms of knowledge and
skills.
The organization’s capacity building has also developed on concepts
of participatory development such as PRA, community mobilization, need assessment,
micro planning. The organization has been extensively utilizing these concepts
in day-to-day practice and functioning.
The confidence level of RBKS has also increased with more exposure and experience
and skill building in various areas of work.
A major achievement for the organization has been its development in terms
of physical infrastructure, staff expansion, automation with usage fax, email
etc. The relationship with the community organizations has been formalized
through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the organization
and the Watershed Committees. The process of capacity building of the organization
staff is based on the needs expressed by them and accordingly trainings have
been provided to the personnel at the field and coordinator levels. Gender
sensitivity has been largely promoted at organization as well as the community
level. Efforts made in this direction include appointment of female staff
at responsible positions in the organization, providing them equal opportunities
of growth and professional development and seeking their participation in
the governance of the organization.
